Citrix Xenapp 6.5: Error: No Product Licenses Found on the License Server for the Selected Model

Posted on December 19, 2011

When configuring XenApp 6.5, the following error message is displayed:

“No product licenses found on the license server for the selected model”

Normally this issue occures when you don’t select the right licensing model (see below).

It seems however that XenApp 6.5 has an issue contacting the Citrix Licensing server when it is build on top of Microsoft Windows 2008 R2.

I tried creating a separate (new) Citrix Licensing server, I tried connecting to the original citrix server and even tried it running local.

After some troubleshooting I found out that I had to install ServicePack 1 of Windows 2008 R2 before I was able to assign the right licensing model.

After the installation of Service Pack 1 I also had to do a complete reinstallation of Xenapp 6.5 before licensing issue was completely resolved.

Citrix: Xenapp: Single Sign On Not Working – Logon Mode Blank

Posted on January 21, 2011

Today I received an issue whereby multiple users complained that they had to authenticate twice, instead of just once (through the Windows Logon)

The customer has a citrix park of about 20 servers and it so happened that there were only a couple servers affected. So my first order of business was to check all the .ini files to see if there was a misconfiguration. Well, going by server for server everything was just set exactly the same.

So I went to see which service or .exe makes this thing happen and why the Logon Mode was blank on those affected servers.. Strangest thing though, because the normal PNagent (Citrix Program Neighborhood) wasn’t affected..

Configuring VeeAM Monitor Part 1

Posted on December 15, 2010

Being impressed with the capabilities of the VeeAM Monitor software. I’ll do a short series on what you can expect within the package (free vs license) and how you can configure it. I will also disclose at the end of the series how you’re able to integrate the package within HP Openview and what you will need to do. This way the Nworks Spy isn’t needed and you can save some money if you’re willing to do some leg work..

The first part of this series will explain how you can add esx hosts and Vcenter into VeeAM Monitor. Basically, I’ll first do a couple “parts”  on the basic assets of VeeAM Monitor, so you can get familiar with it. In later “parts” I will discuss it in depth.

If you’re not interested in VeeAM Monitor, wait a bit. I’ll also do a series on VeeAM Backup v5 & Replication and the VeeAM Reporting Tool.

MS: BackUp Exec 32bit not-compatible with Exchange 2010

Posted on December 15, 2010

Microsoft has chosen not to support 32bit Management Support Tools for backupping Exchange 2010. In previous versions (2007 and back) this was not the case.  So take in mind while creating a new back-up server, which will need to back-up Exchange 2010, that it needs to be 64bit in order to work.

Configuring VMware Data Recovery can be a tricky thing if you encounter problems. However, the most common problems are quite simple to solve.

These are the errors we’re discussing:

Failed to create snapshot for <SERVER>, error -3960 ( cannot quiesce virtual machine)

Failed to create snapshot for <SERVER>, error -3948 ( vcb api exception)

Failed to create snapshot for <SERVER>, error -3941 ( create snapshot failed)

VMware: Ultimate Guide: Powering on a virtual machine "Unable to access a file since it is locked" with RAW Device Mappings for Windows Clustering

Posted on October 8, 2010

Well, let me you about something weird. I ran into an incident on a server with Windows Clustering 2008. The Quorum disk showed up failed, while it was accessible and writable. Thus troubleshooting that issue I did a restart of the server. BUT, the server didn’t want to come back online and I received the error:

Unable to access a file <unspecified file name> since it is locked

Well, according to VMware there are a couple of options to consider:

  • 1. The VM is locked by another server (thinks it’s still online)
  • 2. The LUN connection is locked
  • 3. The .lcf (lock) file has not been removed.
  • 4. The server has not migrated successfully
  • 5. VM Data Recovery failed to back-up and locked the server Virtual Disk
  • 6. A snapshot has not been successfully created/removed and hangs.

My options were:

  • 8. RAW Device Mappings not configured correctly to Iscsi controller.
  • 9. An Iscsi controller was missing.

VMware: Guide: How to Setup Windows Clustering for ESX 4.0 / 4.1 / Vcenter

Posted on October 8, 2010

Regarding an issue I found these manuals from VMware on how to setup Windows Clustering for an VMware environment. It explains why to use physical mappings instead virtual and why this is so important. It also explains the use of SCSI controllers and how to link the hard drives together, in a non-disruptive or dangerous manner.

It was quite helpful and these guides solved the problem for me. That problem is discussed in the upfollowing article :)

Microsoft: BlueScreen View BSOD crash information stored in dump files

Posted on October 1, 2010

BlueScreenView is one awesome free program that helps you to view bugcodes of crashes. It completely takes out the lenghty procedure of downloading symbolsets and whatnot Microsoft tells you to do which is over 150mb….. This program is 80kb (unpacked) and has the tooling to read minidumps of 32bit and 64bit systems. Just read the description below which I have copied of their website: nirsoft. You can find a lot of other useful tooling on their website like appcrash readers, uninstall tools, driver viewing and whatnot. A lot of easy to use tools which every sysadmin can use.

Below you can also find a download of the program in their respective owner version and the modified Hirens version.
